Take the gear off the input end of the VSS |
Get some brass square tubing from a hobby shop |
Cut off about an inch long piece of tubing. |
Measure Stickout on transmission end, top end still connected to speedometer. |
Mark the place the VSS will go, any strait part of the Speedo Cable. Remove cable assembly. |
Measure the Stickout on top end, with trans end set at measured stickout. |
Cut the cable, inner and outer at once with a cutoff disk |
Clean the cut end of the inner shaft. |
Use brass brazing rod, flux, and a propane torch |
Braze the end of the inner shaft so Brass wicks into the spiral |
Grind the brass part square. |
Grind it to fit in the square tubing. It should go in 1/2 inch. If it doesn't go in far enough, it can pull out if the shaft slides down into the drive. |
Trim back the sheath so with the above stickout, the new brass end is exposed. |
Cut a piece of rubber tubing to cover the joint. |
put small washers on each end of the tubing to keep the corners from wearing on the cable or VSS |
Bend some sheetmetal around the tubing as a shield and stiffener. Use hose clamps to hold it all together. |
Do the same for the output side of the VSS. an inner and outer rubber hose is needed. |
Final Assembly ready for installation. Make sure it turns easily. |
